Reclaiming Your Freedom: A Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing a Lost Driver's License

Losing or damaging your non-professional driver's license can be a stressful experience, causing panic and uncertainty. Many individuals find themselves clueless about the process of replacing a lost driver's license issued by the Land Transportation Office (LTO). The good news is that the replacement process is relatively easy and can be completed within a few hours.

In today's blog, we will provide you with all the essential information you need to know when applying for a driver's license replacement at the LTO. Additionally, we will walk you through the step-by-step procedures involved and share some helpful tips to make the process smoother. 

What you need to prepare when applying for a replacement of  your lost driver's license:

1. A valid government-issued ID or a copy of your PSA birth certificate. You may also use any legal document that can prove your age and identity such as an insurance policy in your name, and your school or medical records.

2. A notarized Affidavit of Loss. 

3. A duly accomplished Application for Driver's License (ADL).

4. Law Enforcement Clearance from the LTO Regional Office (if the application is outside Metro Manila)

5. If the lost license is due for renewal, you need to get a Medical Examination Certificate. This may be obtained at any LTO-accredited clinic and by undergoing the necessary medical examination. To see the list of accredited clinics, click here. 

6. If the license is delinquent or has one or more traffic violations indicated in the driver's records, the applicant will be required to undergo examinations and the renewal of the license may be put on hold until the applicant satisfactorily passes all the tests. 

How much are the fees for the replacement of a lost driver's license?

According to the LTO website, licensing fees vary because this is dependent on the expiry date and the date of application at the LTO. Please coordinate with the LTO for fees and payables and not with fixers. When paying fees, make sure you are paying directly to the LTO cashier and ask for an official receipt of your payment. Do not transact with fixers.

How to apply for a replacement of a lost driver's license:

1. Bring all the requirements to an LTO office in your area. Get your queue number upon entering the office.

2. When your number gets called, submit all your IDs and documentary requirements to the Evaluator Counter. Wait for the evaluator to check your documents' legitimacy and completeness.

3. If all the documents and IDs you submitted pass the evaluator's screening, you will be asked to proceed to the picture-taking and signature area. They will verify that the photo and signature they have on file for you are consistent. And then you will be asked to proceed to the cashier for the fees you need to pay. A list of fees will be handed to you at this point.

4. Proceed to the cashier, pay for your fees, and wait for your Official Receipt.

5. Claim your new driver's license at the Releasing Counter by presenting your Official Receipt. 

6. Sign the release form.

At this point, you should already have your driver's license or the temporary license in case your new license is not readily available on the same day.
