GSIS Funeral Claim: Navigating Requirements for Deceased Member's Family

Government Service Insurance System members (GSIS) can avail themselves of various services. These services are provided in exchange for members making consistent monthly contributions according to the rates established by the government agency.

It provides services such as loans and benefits designed for eligible members, which can also be extended to their families. One such example is the Funeral Claim or Funeral Benefit.

Indeed, it is a reality that arranging a respectable wake and burial in the Philippines entails a significant financial commitment. If a GSIS member passes away, their family or individuals who covered the burial costs are eligible to seek reimbursement through the GSIS Funeral Claim program.

Below are the qualification criteria established by the GSIS for its Funeral Benefit offer:

1. Deceased must be an active GSIS member.

2. If the member has resigned or exited from service, he or she must be entitled to receive future separation or retirement benefits (not dismissed from service).

3. An old age pensioner

4. A retiree who was pensionable under the RA 8291 at the time of his retirement but chose to retire based on RA. 1616.

5. A retiree under RA 1616 before the enactment of RA 8291, with a minimum of 20 years of service, regardless of age.

Per GSIS guidelines, the benefit is disbursed to the family members of the deceased GSIS member in the following order:

a. Legal spouse

b. Legal child who paid for the funeral expenses

c. Any individual capable of presenting indisputable proof of bearing the funeral costs for the deceased GSIS member. 

The list of requirements for the GSIS Funeral Benefit varies from the requirements for the GSIS Disability Benefit Claim and the requirements for filing a GSIS Unemployment Benefit Claim.

Outlined below are the GSIS Funeral Claim requirements for when the legal spouse of the deceased member or pensioner files the claim:

1. Original PSA Death Certificate of the deceased member/pensioner

2. Two valid IDs (bring the original copies and photocopies of the IDs0

3. Original PSA Marriage Certificate

4. Original PSA Birth Certificate of the claimant

You may visit www.PSAHelpline.ph to place your order; after paying, you will receive your PSA certificates in 3 to 4 working days, if you are in Metro Manila (and may take up to 8 working days if the delivery address is in the province.). 

For claimants who are not the legal spouse, the GSIS Funeral Claim requirements are as follows:

1. Original PSA Death Certificate of the member

2. Original and photocopy of the Official Receipt of funeral expenses in the claimant's name. If the family availed of a Funeral Plan, provide a Certification from the service provider.

3. GSIS Affidavit of Funeral Expense Form

4. PSA Birth Certificate of the claimant or any valid government-issued ID showing the claimant's birthdate and year. Bring the original ID and photocopies for submission.

Make sure to bring all original copies of PSA certificates and IDs as well as its corresponding photocopies. Be prepared to show the original documents and IDs for verification and submit the photocopies to the GSIS.

The funeral benefit claim, along with all the required attachments, may be filed at any GSIS office.
